How long can a pre-authorization charge hold?

Pre-authorizations and authorizations can take up to 28 days to expire. The exact length of time for a pre-authorization charge also depends on the type of transaction, the amount of the transaction, and the policies of the card issuer.

During the pre-authorization period, the funds aren’t actually transferred to the merchant.
